A structure of five paragraphs is a known standard for various types of essay. You will need to apply this structure to most of your college writing tasks, which means it would be useful to memorize and master it on practice. Hopefully, this guide is comprehensive enough to help you figure out what the basics of five-paragraph essays are and how to write such essays professionally.

5-Paragraph Essay

5-Paragraph Structure

The structure consisting of 5 paragraphs is typical of almost any essay. You start with an introductory paragraph, follow up with three body paragraphs, and end with a concluding paragraph. Here is a brief description of what each part is like:

  1. Introduction.

This part of an essay serves to set the readers into the right mood and make them interested in reading further. In your introduction, you must introduce the main ideas of your essay but still leave some space for further discussion. Your thesis is an essential ingredient in the introduction recipe. Don’t write more than two sentences in length but make sure they make up a comprehensible statement – if you fail to make a clear statement at the beginning, there will be no point in the whole paper.

  1. Body.

This part consists of three paragraphs. Such structure gives you a possibility to present the key arguments in a pecking order, starting with the strongest ones and ending with the weakest ones. All of them should be logically connected with each other. You can use such linking words as “by comparison”, “similarly”, “at the same time”, “in fact”, and others.

Also, each paragraph should focus on solely one idea. Make sure you introduce this idea in the very first sentence so that it would be sort of a mini thesis. The other sentences (four minimum) should be made up by arguments supporting the idea and linking it with the general idea of your essay.

Note that the essay body has to be very detailed. It should contain clear examples, facts, and other evidence to make your words sound convincing.

  1. Conclusion.

The final part of the essay is a conclusion. This is where you summarize the progress you have made throughout the whole paper and present the result to the reader. A good conclusion is the one that sends the reader back to the main essay ideas from the introduction and sheds some new light on them, considering what has been found in the body part. Note that the conclusion not a paraphrased introduction. It’s rather a reinterpreted one.

A general rule as for conclusion is that you must not introduce any new ideas – you only present a logical result to the reader, and do it in such a way that the reader is left without any hesitations as for whether your point is right. Overall, it’s your last chance to make the reader believe you.

Tips on Writing an Amazing Essay

Whatever the topic of your paper is, you will have no problems with writing as long as you follow these tips:

  1. Organization.

  • Carefully read the task and don’t start any writing until you understood it completely.

  • Realize what the purpose of the paper is and develop a plan (not an outline of your paper but a plan of your work).

  1. Outline.

  • The primary point in your plan should be outline creation. Before you start researching and writing, you have to know what you should write about – otherwise, you can easily lose your thought and ruin the logical consequence.

  • Divide the paper into structural parts and plan what will be included into each of them.

  • Don’t just give short titles for each point of the outline – write a brief description of what to tell the reader in each part.

  1. Style.

  • Every type of essay requires certain style and tone. Depending of what essay you were assigned, what its topic is, and your own writing style, you have to develop a writer’s voice you will stick to throughout the entire paper.

  • Be engaging. Don’t be afraid to use some jokes, provoking questions, unusual sentence structures, etc. Diversify your English to make the paper interesting and engaging.

  • Avoid using passive voice; use active instead. That’s a universal rule for writers, following which you will not only sound more professional but also make your text easy for reading and understanding.

  • Make an effective start. Of course, the whole paper must evoke interest in the reader, but your intro should be the most powerful part of the essay. You can start with a quotation, a joke, a question, a convincing statement, or an interesting fact – there are dozens of ways you can start strong.

  1. Writing.

  • There are some rules as for the language you use, and you need to follow them in order to write an amazing essay. For example, don’t use colloquial phrases, slang words, and dialectisms in writing.

  • Avoid using contractions and abbreviations.

  • Avoid the verb “to be” and all its forms as well as “there is/are” constructions as they present you as a writer with a limited vocabulary.

  • Start sentences with “however”, “still”, and “yet” instead of “and” or “but”.

  • Watch your commas and other punctuation marks to avoid sentence structures that could confuse your readers.

  1. Revising.

  • Use spell and grammar checking software in order to get rid of any possible mistakes and make your writing flawless.

  • Once you finish with your final draft, it’s good to go get some rest for a little and then come back to revise the text once again. After that, don’t be surprised if you decide to write the second final draft. You can also ask someone to read your essay and suggest improvements.

  • Watch out for “fluff” and unnecessary information – be brief, laconic, and detailed concerning the ideas and make sure the sentences are linked to one another logically.
